Download Form 709 with tax tables
If you work on this yourself - please note that all fields not formatted "numeric" cannot be used in calculations.
I have struggled to complete the gift and generation skipping tax form 709, illustrated above, for several reasons. TurboTax doesn't support it. I tried to hire a CPA and they all refused to help me, although they assured me I had a legal responsibility to complete Form 709.
Bloomberg Tax has some software "demo" but they won't tell you how much it costs, and you have to speak to a salesman to even unpack the software. I don't know why their salesmen don't call, but I can guess it's because the my family isn't on their list of deep-pocketed clients to whom they would like to sell the software.
The IRS provides a form that can be filled in with a computer, but the computations are very complicated, and the IRS form doesn't help you with those calculations. The first couple years I filled out and submitted this form by hand, working through the table with 12 tax brackets with the aid of awk and a calculator, but I knew there had to be a better way.
I think I have finally found a somewhat easier way to complete the Gift tax return, Form 709. I've purchased PDF Studio PRO, which lets you make spreadsheet-like computations inside a PDF. It cost $139, which is a bargain, considering that you only need to pay that once. With this software I have extended the IRS form to make the computations I need. It's a big job, and I am not done yet. If you download this work in progress, please understand that I do not become responsible for any part of your tax preparation. I am offering my work in the hope it might be useful, but without any promise of accuracy. My strongest hope is that this becomes a whole lot more useful than it is today, with every implied computation from the instructions actually expressed in javascript inside the form, but I think it's a good start.
